22 teams for a total of 66 bowlers.
The City of Hope triples tournament consist of three ten end games and is divided into “A” and “B” greens. The “A” green has 12 teams and the “B” green had 10 teams. Only the top scoring team on each green gets a plaque for their efforts.  Each bowler has to pay a minimum of $20.00 or more  to enter the tournament, and all of the money collected is given to the City of Hope.
The winning team on the “A” green was Marinko Tudor, Margi Rambo and John Gonzales from the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club.  The second place team was headed by Bill Kagan from the Oaks North Bowling Green Club in San Diego, with Conrad and Judai Melton representing the Sun City Lawn Bowling Club, and the third place team was captained by Todd Werner from the Santa Monica Lawn Bowling Club and Colin Stead and Marty Bierman both of the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club.
The “B” Green top three teams were: George Rajacich, Richard Mason, and Linda Baton from the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club in Los Angeles. Second spot went to Dee McSparren and Tony and Rita Greenberg from the Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club, and third went to Alan Ngo, Julia Tong and Raymond Che of the Alhambra Lawn Bowling Club.
Every cent collected was given to Mrs. Brenda Warner of the “Together for Hope Auxiliary” of the City of Hope. Mrs. Gayle Plunkett the Tournament Director gave Mrs. Warner a bundle of checks totaling $3360.00 to aid in the search for the cure of cancer and for research at their facility in Duarte.
The day was overcast but pleasant. The bowlers played two games and had lunch.  Gene and Gayle Plunkett provided the food, with some help from the Ralph’s Market in Hastings Ranch Shopping Complex.  Everyone had plenty to eat and drink and everyone was invited to come back for the 40th annual tournament next June.

LAWN BOWLERS RAISE $3,200 FOR THE CITY OF HOPE

The Santa Anita Bowling Green Club held their thirty-eighth annual City of Hope Triples Tournament at their greens in the Arcadia County Park on the 7th of June.  It was a beautiful day for lawn bowling.  Bowlers came from around the southland, from San Diego to Santa Clarita, and from Santa Monica to Hemet. Eighteen triple teams played on two greens.

This tournament has raised many thousands of dollars for the City of Hope over the years. This year the tournament was able to donate $3,200.00, which will be used to further cancer research. Again this year, Gene and Gayle Plunkett paid for the luncheon for the bowlers. There was a donation from the Ralph’s Market in Pasadena's Hastings Ranch Shopping Center which helped make the day a success.

Gayle Plunkett, as the Tournament Director, kept the scores totaled and the quenelle rankings in order. The winners were decided by the number of ends won and games won. There were only 10 ends per game. Each end won for a team counted one point and if they won the game they received an additional three points. So, when the games were completed, the “A” Green and the “B” Green had one winning team, based on the scoring.

The “A” Green winners were the “B” Green winners from last year. The Skip was Paul Gresbrink with Bob and Gloria Montes from the Santa Ana Lawn Bowling Club. They had a total of 28 points with three wins.

The winning team on the “B” Green was from Santa Anita Bowling Green Club. The team Skip was Steve Dowd, his wife Jean Dowd and Ray Aston, a new member of the Santa Anita Club. They had three wins and 29 points.

Both the “A” and “B” Green winners received plaques stating they were winners in the 2008 City of Hope Triples Tournament. There were no other awards or prizes for the bowlers. Just the knowledge they are helping the City of Hope continue their fight against cancer.

Mrs. Brenda Warner from the City of Hope Auxiliary “Together for Hope” accepted the $3,200 stack of checks and thanked the club and bowlers for helping fund research and care at the City of Hope. Brenda and her daughter provided cold water, sodas, and home made cookies for the bowlers. They didn’t take too much home when the games were over. Gayle Plunkett thanked them for their efforts and support of our games.
