Beverly Hills 24 Long Beach 6
Captain Bill Wolff knew Beverly Hills needed a big win against Long Beach so he decided not to play and got Hall of Famer Ann Barber out of retirement. The strategy was not working; after 8 ends in the rinks it was LB 10 BH 3. But then the chemistry started to work and led by Never Nervous Neville BH went on to win 20-13 [8-2]. Neville and Allen had a solid win in one pairs [8-2]. Joe and Ann were down 8-0 after 5 but won the second 5 12-0. Bowling is a strange game. Joe had some amazing shots and won 8-2. Final score BH 24- LB 6.
Santa Anita 21 Alhambra 9
Santa Anita's team was Marinko Tudor, Steve Dowd, Ray Casey and Dick Ashmore.
In the rinks Santa Anita went out to a 12-0 lead after 6 ends. Alhambra then started scoring but the final score was Santa Anita 17 Alhambra 10. Team score was 8-2.
In the pairs game of Steve Dowd and Ray Casey it was 7-1 after 5 ends. At the end of 8 it was Santa Anita 7 and Alhambra 8. Santa Anita scored 12 points in the next six ends and wound up winning the match by a score of 19 to 9. Team score Santa Anita 8 Alhambra2.
The pairs team of Marinko Tudor and Dick Ashmore had a very close game. Score went back and forth. Final game score was 17-17. Team score Santa Anita 5 Alhambra 5.
Sun City I 18 Sun City II 12
We had two great games. The rinks game was tied on the 14th end (13-13), then Sun City II won on the last bowl, 14-13.
The doubles game between Bob Hill and Joe Rahm (Sun City I) and Pam Munson and Pat Smith (Sun City II) was also a close game, with the men winning 15-14. The other doubles game between Evelyn Teil and Boyd Jordan (Sun City I) and Tom Bently and Lois Brandon (Sun City II) ended 24-4 for Sun City I.
The total for the day was Sun City I with 18 points and Sun City II with 12. WE had a great day, and look forward to next year.
Pasadena 16, Santa Ana 2 14.
Rob Bouman (Pasadena) had 2 game turning shots with last bowls. Bob Montes (Santa Ana) had his share of big plays too. Pasadena and Santa Ana each scored 40 points in the sum of the three games.

Santa Monica II - Bye
Beverly Hills 21 Alhambra 9
It was a cold Saturday, and Alhambra discovered the real grass at Beverly Hills was trickier than their carpet. The problem was it was tricky for everybody. Alhambra started strong in the rinks but gave up a 6 and ended up losing by 5. BH split the pairs with both games being decided by great shots in the final end. BH 21 AL 9 but it should have been 15 -15. [Bill Wolff]
Sun City I 16 San Diego 14
I watched this game personally as I made a visit in the afternoon to Sun City. The game was exciting, but even more exciting was the traffic accident that occurred on the road during the game. Because I had my cell phone on me, I called 911 immediately, and was gratified with a response of paramedics within a few minutes. Fortunately there were only minor injuries involved. [Editor]
Sun City II 11 Newport 19
Again my enjoyment of this game was cut short by the traffic accident. However, from what I saw Sun City made a creditable effort in holding a star-studded Newport team. It was a rather cold day, but the green seemed to be running well, and it was fun watching the two teams compete. For those that have not been to Sun City in a while, they have made some construction changes, and have their closest green out of commission for maintenance.
Santa Monica 26 Santa Monica 4
I made a fleeting visit to Santa Monica, during a trip that also took me to Beverly Hills and then out to Sun City. At that point in the rinks, Santa Monica had gone into an 8-0 lead by the third end. During the next seven ends, Santa Anita had pulled it back to 11-10, and it looked like the momentum was in their direction. I was very surprised when the result was emailed to me. [Editor]
Again my thanks to all clubs for making me very welcome as I visit. [Editor]

Note: On January 20th – Riverside 18 Newport 12
Newport Harbor came to Riverside and played the match that had originally scheduled for Jan 19 but by mutual agreement was changed to Jan 20.
It was a cool, crisp morning that turned into a cloudless and beautiful day. The morning fours match was bowls at its classic finest, with all players aware that no matter how quickly any of us pushed through our games, we were all destine to miss both National Football League championships that were being played that Sunday on TV.
When the dust finally settled, the Meltons and Mummas of Riverside had outplayed their distinguished visitors, earning 9 bonus points to Newport's 1.
Charlie Hubert and Dave Stennis returned the favor by handing Larry and Judai an 8 to 2 loss in the afternoon pairs. But Conrad and Jo were able to squeak past Ed Quo and Shep Sheppard by 7 to 3, thus earning Riverside the overall win, with a final cumulative score of 18 to 12.
Game write-ups Jan 26th:

The pairs were played by Marinko and Bob on one team and Steve and Ray on the other team. Marinko and Bob lost their pairs game. Santa Anita 2 points - Beverly Hills 8 points and Steve and Ray lost their game in the last two ends. Santa Anita 3 points - Beverly Hills - 7 points.

Newport 30 San Diego 0
As the rain quit and the sun came out, the team from San Diego drove up to Newport Harbor to enjoy a beautiful Saturday.
Although, the final score of the match seemed a little one-sided, each game was pretty tight.
The green turned out to be slower than everyone thought, so Howard had a tough time finding holes through some of the short bowls, with his narrow bowls.
Brian skipped as Phil lead for their pairs against Howard and Brenda. Charlie skipped as Brad lead for their pairs against Christine and Melanie.
Both Newport Harbor pairs teams were able to hold of the formidable teams from San Diego.
