GOVERNOR SALUTES “CALIFORNIA LAWN BOWLS DAY”
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has endorsed the May 9th California Lawn Bowls Day, a salute to state’s 59 lawn bowling facilities that will be hosting local and regional Open Houses.
“Saturday On The Green”, an annual event, will feature free lessons and demonstrations by national champions, from 10 am to 3 pm at participating lawn bowling facilities.
Men and women are invited to try their skill at this sport, which, for many, has become a lifetime activity. Lawn bowls is a finesse-skill game, sometimes referred to as “billiards on grass”. Although it is a sport for all ages, and played both as a recreation and highly competitive international sport, it’s low impact manner and unique social interaction appeals especially to adults and seniors.
Those looking to take advantage of the free lessons should wear flat-sole tennis type shoes to the bowling green. All equipment will be provided without charge.
California’s first lawn bowling green opened in 1901 at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, followed in Southern California by bowling complexes in Redlands, Pasadena and Long Beach. Currently, the Southland has 38 lawn bowling clubs from San Diego south to Santa Maria north.
