Saturday on the Green
May 7th, 2011
“Saturday On The Green”, an annual event, will feature free lessons and demonstrations by national champions at participating lawn bowling facilities.

Men and women are invited to try their skill at this sport, which, for many, has become a lifetime activity.  Lawn bowls is a finesse-skill game, sometimes referred to as “billiards on grass”.  Although it is a sport for all ages, and played both as a recreation and highly competitive international sport, it’s low impact manner and unique social interaction appeals especially to adults and seniors.

Those looking to take advantage of the free lessons should wear flat-sole tennis type shoes to the bowling green.  All equipment will be provided without charge.

California’s first lawn bowling green opened in 1901 at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, followed in Southern California by bowling complexes in Redlands, Pasadena and Long Beach.  Currently, the Southland has 38 lawn bowling clubs from San Diego south to Santa Maria north. Recently, Southern California has welcomed the re-opening of the Coronado Island Lawn Bowling Club.

Lawn Bowling Clubs Across Southern California Invite the Public to an Open House and Celebrate Governor Schwarzenegger’s proclamation of “Lawn Bowls Day” May 10th, 2008

You’ll be surprised how lawn bowls has changed and grown. 30 clubs in Southern California are encouraging their neighbors to experience the game of Lawn Bowls and perhaps become new members. Everyone is welcome; all you need to bring are flat-soled shoes and a smile.

Free lessons and a party atmosphere will be offered during the Open Houses, many of which are co-sponsored by the city in which they are located.

The lawn bowling community in Southern California has enjoyed a steady increase in membership and interest over the past few years. It is a sport that everyone can play, is easy to learn, but difficult to master.

The clubs participating in the Open House are all members of the Southwest Division of the United States Lawn Bowling Association. The Southwest Division is the largest and most active in all of the United States. Lawn Bowlers from Southern California are consistently part of Team USA, proudly and successfully representing our country in tournaments around the world.

Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, with the support of all the clubs in the Southwest Division, are hosts to the only International Lawn Bowls Tournament in the US held in October.

Lawn Bowls Day – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be proclaiming Lawn Bowls Day. We have been informed of the impending proclamation and look forward to the Official day!
